Building A Home Recording Studio - Part 2, Digital Audio Workstations for PC
A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is your basic software for recording, editing and mixing audio data in your computer. I am no real expert in detailed, bit by bit specifications but I do know what works for me and majority of digital musicians out there. Mostly by trying out the softwares myself and reading online.

I’d like to classify the DAWs in two categories, PC and Mac.
Digital Audio Workstations for PC

Cakewalk Sonar 8 Producer Edition
Roland
Sonar is a powerful tool for editing, mixing and recording both audio and MIDI data. It comes with built-in softsynths (which I hardly use anyway) and is compatible with most audio plug-ins. I personally use Sonar when I work with MIDI on the PC. The interface of editing MIDI and audio is intuitive and is a breeze to use once you learn how. It has a moderate learning curve which might take around 2 to get the hang of.

Cool Edit 2.0
Syntrillium
This is probably the most recommended DAW for beginners. This is the most user friendly DAW I’ve ever used. The original developer has discontinued support for this software and is probably available now only via torrent sites. Adobe has re-released this software under the name of Adobe Audition but I still use the old Cool Edit today. It is very easy to use and still does the job for me when it comes to mixing and recording audio. It has minimal midi functions though. But this is where it all began for me.
