Creating and acquiring music digitally today is becoming more and more user-friendly. One of the growing trends today for solo artists is using an Ipod as a minus one player for live gigs, or what I’d like to call a ‘virtual back-up band’. The common dilemma for this set-up is figuring out the right input, output gadgets and connector cables. There are numerous possibilities for this but I believe I have the best answer.

The solution after the jump.

First you need to acquire a good portable mixer. I found the Behringer Xenyx 502 fit my needs. It has a fairly clean audio output and its very straightforward to use. It’s great to bring around gigs because of its portability, it fits well in your gadget bag.

Next, you need the proper cables. On a budget, you can get a regular RCA (mini earphone jack) cable with red and white male composite connectors, then just get two giant audio jack adaptors with female composite connectors. The giant jacks will connect with one channel of your mixer and the RCA naturally connects to the Ipod.

But the best solution is still using less adaptors. I had my Ipod to mixer cable custom made. Remember, more extension connectors means more loss of sound quality.

Now to connect the mixer straight to the main sound system, have a male XLR and two giant audio jacks cable custom made or use the necessary adaptors. The end result should be like this:

The XLR end will connect directly to the PA system of the venue. This way, you have full control of your Ipod sound output onstage, which includes volume and equalization.

I’m currently using this setup for my live solo act. I use the Ipod to the back-up music I arranged via Logic Studio 9.

If you have your own solutions, please feel free to share it on the comments section.

As a composer and arranger in the Philippines for over 12 years now, I can confidently say that I have mastered the basic process of composing music. They say that with the advent of the digital age, anyone can now compose music because of readily available home recording tools. While I definitely agree with this statement, yes, anyone can make music, BUT not everyone can make it brilliant and long lasting. Using loops over and over again gets old fast and won’t advance your technique and skill. Not to mention talent, not everyone has this as well.

Diwa’s Home Studio

With that said, I will now discuss three basic steps in creating your own piece of music.

Conceptualization
This is the part where you dream about your music. You don’t need to be consciously doing this. You can do your daily chores, walk around the park, or simply stare into nothingness, all the while, you’re subconsciously cooking up melodies and harmonies in your head. I’ve done this countless times, especially when accepting a fresh project. After knowing the project details and requirements, I immediately condition my brainwaves to think of sounds related to the needed concept.

You may also have your musical instrument at hand and just play some melodies that you think about. One of those melodies may be the one you’re looking for. It may take seconds, minutes, days or maybe weeks but you will eventually have a “eureka” moment. Congratulations, you have done the first step in composing.

Documentation
This is very important. After getting that brilliant musical idea, you must document it immediately. You may forget it and it will be lost forever. Record it, notate it, or write down the chords. Whichever process you use, just do it right away. You may also check my previous article for tips documenting your musical ideas.

Execution
Finally, this is where you arrange your musical ideas into a formalized song or instrumental music. You may record live at your home recording studio, or use the extensive number of digital audio workstations for PC, Mac or both at your disposal. Either way, you’ve just learned a very simple but important process in composing music.

I’d like to thank my silent (but loyal) readers for bearing with me despite my lack of new posts. But it’s already holiday season here in the Philippines as well so I’ll write new stuff for you. Anyway, to business. I’ve recently discussed some digital audio workstation softwares for Mac and PC users most recommended by composers and arrangers today.

I will now give you three multi-platform DAWs that are commonly used today.

Reason 4 (Mac and PC)
Propellerheads
Although Reason is a standalone software with its own editing capabilities, its strength lies with its built-in samples. It offers great sounding and diverse instruments and sound effects that composers/arrangers use it more as a secondary sound bank in conjunction to another DAW (such as Sonar or Logic). This is a process known as “rewiring”. Reason’s own editing interface is not very user friendly and not as intuitive compared to Sonar for example. But the quality of the samples that come along with the software is reason (pun intended) enough to purchase Reason.

Cubase (Mac and PC)
Steinberg

Cubase, in my opinion, is like the cousin of Sonar, their interface and features are almost similar visually. I haven’t really used Cubase personally so I’m not very familiar with how it’s used. But I’ve seen it in action during a recording session at a local studio. Suffice to say, it fulfills its duties, but it lacks some minor features that I’m used to have such as “snapping” grid when editing midi/audio regions. Then again, I’m not the best one to ask when it comes to using Cubase. Perhaps you can add some information as well at the comments section.

ProTools (Mac and PC)
Digidesign

Music industry mainstays consider ProTools to be the “standard” DAW in most professional studios. And true enough, most big studios I’ve worked in here in the Philippines either uses or eventually switched to ProTools. It’s like the end-all of recording studio DAWs. It is a very powerful audio editing software with lots of editing features.

Its interface is intuitive and very user friendly. I believe many will agree with me today when I say that ProTools is the “king” of digital audio recording and editing. But I can’t say the same about its MIDI capabilities. I rarely see or hear people using it for MIDI editing. Another catch of ProTools is that you need a compatible audio interface hardware. But once you get the basic requirements, using ProTools is definitely worth it.

Each morning, baskets of black fruits mysteriously appear by the front yard of Fe. Thinking that it was a reconciliatory gesture from her abusive husband, Dante, Fe tells him about it. This only confirms Dante’s suspicions that she might be entertaining a lover. Fearing her husband’s jealousy, Fe grows even more scared as the fruits kept coming, a step closer to her front door. She keeps everything to herself until she turns to a former suitor, Arturo. When Fe urges Arturo to elope, she finds out that the young man has far more binding commitments with his family. Caught between an abusive husband and an impotent lover, Fe has to decide. Will she escape with her elusive suitor who could very well be just a figment of her imagination or stay trapped with the men in her real life who could never protect her nor make her happy?
Now, at 27, Laya possesses a cold exterior that hides torrents of pain. Working as a travel photographer, Laya is sent to Isabela to capture a rare harvest ritual called Mangatyanan by the Labwanan tribe. What Laya finds there, however, is a severely dwindled group held together by their desperate leader MANG RENATO. Soon Laya senses a strong connection between the tribe’s predicament and her own troubled life. Events spiral out of control as the Mangatyanan crumbles under Mang Renato’s desperate grip and Laya is forced to flee. But something happens that brings her face-to-face with her own demons.

Hello to all my readers. I apologize if I haven’t posted for a long time. I’ve been doing all sorts of projects back here in the Philippines. Here now is a trailer of “24K”, an independent film about a ragtag group of treasure hunters, in search of the legendary Yamashita’s treasure. I did all the original music in the film.

Apologies to non-Filipino speakers, but it’s music I’m showcasing anyway. You can read some more about the film in its official blog and the official website.

The Philippine version of Playboy magazine recently launched local star and theater artist Aiza Marquez as their covergirl for May 2009. I was fortunate enough to be invited at the launch party at a local hip bar called Zenses, because aside from being a composer and arranger, I also blog about some events.

It was not so long ago though (early 2008), that I worked with Aiza for a local stage musical adaptation of the Anton de-Saint Exupery’s The Little Prince. She was one of the lead actors playing the role of the Rose, in the Little Prince’s home planet. I was the musical arranger for the entire play.

Photography by Carl Valenzona

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch a single run of the play because of a busy schedule. Good thing I was able to interact with Aiza during the Playboy party and she gave positive feedback about the play, and she even signed my Playboy postcard.

Here’s a sample from the Little Prince musical, it’s Overture of the entire play, instrumental only.

There you go! Hope you liked that one. Thanks again to the staff of Playboy Magazine Philippines for another great party.
