How to Create an Online Music Portfolio - Part 1
Creating an online portfolio is integral to promoting your music online. As a composer and arranger in the Philippines specializing in online promotions, I made it a point to make a serious online portfolio via my website.
Why should one make an online portfolio? It’s the fastest way you can direct a possible client asking for samples of your work, without having to meet personally. In lieu of that, I’m going to share with you the basic tools which you can utilize in building your portfolio.
The first tool I’ll discuss are online music players.
The most important thing in your portfolio is of course your music. These are some websites that I recommend which will make your music available online.
Imeem
www.imeem.com
Imeem is very user friendly and has a large community base. Though the interface is a bit confusing at first, Imeem works for me as I’ve been using it in my website for quite a while now. You can embed your music in any HTML format and you can even customize the appearance of your music player.
Update (01/18/2010):
As of this update, Imeem no longer exists as it has been bought by MySpace. I found an alternative site much similar to Imeem called Last.fm. Cheers!
Esnips
www.esnips.com
Esnips is very much like Imeem but has a simpler navigation interface. It also has a more organized filing system unlike the chaotic clutter that is Imeem. The customization is a bit limited though and they have an annoying filter system that automatically rejects an upload if it “sounds” like a copyrighted song. I don’t know how they do it but they seem to have a pitch sensitive audio filter. I tried to upload an original song of mine but could not upload because according to the filter, it “sounds like” an existing copyrighted song.
Youtube
www.youtube.com
Yes, Youtube. Everybody’s favorite video uploading site. It’s also used for uploading your music which can be accompanied by a full music video, or just a still background picture appropriate to your music. Either way, it’s still an effective music sharing tool for your portfolio and could probably entice your client to click it because of some visual aids.
There you go! I hope I helped you with my tips. Good luck!
